What is professional development?<\/h2>\n\n
Providing training and development for members of your team (including yourself) is critical for business success and growth. Well-trained employees are likely to be more efficient and productive, need less supervision, and have fewer accidents. This is likely to increase job satisfaction and staff morale, and therefore enhance the whole culture of the business.<\/p>\n\n
By offering opportunities for professional development (PD) you can improve the way that your employees carry out their jobs, as well as cut costs and reduce inefficiencies. On the other hand, a lack of knowledge and skills, or poor attitudes, can result in lost productivity, lost customers, reputational damage, and poor relationships between employees and managers.<\/p>\n\n
Professional development is generally provided for four main purposes:<\/p>\n\n

To familiarise the new employee with the business and the working conditions<\/li>\n\t
To refresh and enhance an existing employee\u2019s knowledge<\/li>\n\t
To train employees on new or updated technology, processes, or other changes<\/li>\n\t

How important is professional development?<\/h3>\n\n
Making an effort to keep up professional development is becoming more important in all professions as the rate of change and number of specialisms increases. In the construction industry, PD has become a vital part of a professional career. This is a result of continuous and accelerating changes in technology, regulations and legal requirements, increasing specialisation, and the complexity of the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n
It is no longer adequate to obtain a professional qualification at the beginning of a career and then to work for 40 or 50 years with no further structured pattern of learning. Instead, lifelong learning is becoming the norm, with professionals taking part-time courses and short courses to understand emerging innovations such as building information modelling (BIM) or taking career breaks and returning to full-time education to improve or develop an aspect of their practice.<\/p>\n\n

We don't have the time or space to take an in-depth look at how to teach, but there are some basics that can be really helpful when designing your own training sessions (whether formal or informal).<\/p>\n\n

Learning outcomes<\/h3>\n\n
A learning outcome is a statement that describes what the learner should be able to do as a result of the training.<\/p>\n\n
It is really important that you can describe the objective using an action verb<\/strong>. Here's an example:<\/p>\n\n
Hemi has noticed that Mark has been pouring paint into the stormwater drain outside the building site. He needs to instruct Mark on how to dispose of paint properly.<\/p>\n\n
Therefore, the learning outcome would be something like:<\/p>\n\n
\"At the end of the training, Mark will be able to dispose of paint in a safe and compliant manner.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n
In this example, the action verb is \"dispose\". You can see there is also a condition set \u2013 he can dispose of the paint in a \"safe\" and \"compliant\" manner. This means that Mark will also learn the importance of safety and how to comply with environmental regulations around waste.<\/p>\n\n
It's important to get this wording correct, otherwise it can be too vague. A good test to see if your learning outcome is well written, is if you can easily observe or measure it.<\/p>\n\n
A badly worded learning outcome would be something like:<\/p>\n\n
\"At the end of the training, Mark will know how to clean up properly.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n
In this example, the verb \"know\" is ambiguous and difficult to measure. Also, \"clean up properly<\/em>\" is very vague.<\/p>\n\n

This usually consists of a module that covers a skill or set of skills that can be learned using a computer. It usually consists of readings, videos, and\/or interactive activities. There may be a quiz or other form of test to measure the employee's understanding of the content. What does job shadowing involve?<\/p>\n","answer":"
This is where a less experienced employee tags along with a more experienced employee and observes them performing certain tasks. The trainer (the more experienced employee) will often say their thought processes out loud and answer any questions. This is where a site will have a dedicated space for employees to 'play around' with tools and techniques. Getting hands-on with the gear and making mistakes is a great way to hone technical skills. Once training is complete, there is usually some form of assessment that takes place. Assessment is the task of measuring or judging whether a trainee can perform the skill or demonstrate their understanding of a concept to an acceptable level.<\/p>\n\n
The most common form of assessment for construction trainees will be a practical skills test, although apprentices and those doing formal study through an education provider may be expected to perform written tests.<\/p>\n\n
In a practical skills test, an expert will observe the trainee performing the task, and then make a judgement as to whether they were able to do it correctly.<\/p>\n\n

Evaluation<\/h3>\n\n
We have looked at the three main elements of a training session: learning outcomes, learning activities, and assessment. There is a fourth element that should be mentioned \u2013 evaluation. This is generally reserved for more formal situations, although it should be something worth considering no matter the level of formality.<\/p>\n\n
Evaluation means that you are evaluating the effectiveness of the training session. In a formal setting, this means checking in with your learners that they have found the training useful. It also means analysing the assessment results, i.e. did your learners pass the assessment and achieve the learning outcomes? Were they able to effectively perform the task on site after the training session? Are there any changes you would make to the session for next time?<\/p>\n\n
This doesn't only apply to formal settings. If you're finding that your employees are having trouble erecting scaffolding when they're having it informally demonstrated to them on site, perhaps it's time to consider running a formal training session instead.<\/p>\n\n
Professional development should be considered a key part of your continuous improvement and you should always be on the lookout for opportunities to help your employees become more effective and efficient at what they do.
