Remuneration is defined as \"money paid for work or a service\". However, remuneration is sometimes more than money, and it is not as easy as handing over some cash to an employee for a day\u2019s work. What does remuneration look like?<\/h3>\n\n
Firstly, you need to decide how you are going to pay your employees. Will it be an hourly rate, or a salary?<\/p>\n\n
Then you decide if you are going to include additional benefits, for example, subsidised health insurance, a mobile phone, or company vehicle.<\/p>\n\n
Before you make any decision about what to include, you need to be aware of some of the legal and tax requirements regarding remuneration.<\/p>\n\n

Once you have worked out what will be included in the remuneration package, you then need to think about how frequently you will pay your employees, the pay period (i.e. the time frame that the pay covers), and how they will get paid.<\/p>\n\n

Paying your staff<\/h2>\n\n
How do you know how much you should be paying your employees?<\/p>\n\n
Setting salaries or hourly rates can be confusing and tricky. It is a balance between paying enough money to the employee to make it worthwhile for them to work versus overhead costs and the amount of revenue coming in to provide your end profit.<\/p>\n\n
As previously stated, there is a minimum wage that by law has to be paid, but this does not stop you from paying more than that. <\/p>\n\n
So, where do you start?<\/p>\n\n
It may help to think about the overall cost of a project and consider how labour costs fit into this. How much is enough?<\/h3>\n\n
Still not sure how much you should be paying? Think about how much you were being paid before you started your own business. Are you able to sustain that rate? Is it still the going rate? Looking on places like Seek or Trade Me Jobs is a good place to see what other businesses are offering.<\/p>\n\n
The 'Useful links' at the bottom of the page offer some advice and\/or information on how much an employee should\/could be earning. This includes the minimum wage set out in the Minimum Wage Act 1983<\/a>, that is:<\/p>\n\n

Experience counts<\/h3>\n\n
Remember, when determining how much to pay someone, you need to look at the skills and experience that person brings to the job and pay them accordingly. Paying someone with a broad range of relevant skills and experience a higher rate demonstrates that you value what they bring to the job. Paying an apprentice the same as someone with 15 years on-site experience may get you more apprentices or trainees, but not so many experienced workers. What are rewards?<\/h2>\n\n
Unlike remuneration, rewards are voluntary. This means that they are not a legal requirement, nor do they need to be identified in the employment contract.<\/p>\n\n
So why reward employees? After all you are already paying them to do the job, aren\u2019t you? <\/p>\n\n

Rewarding employees for a job well done provides them with the motivation to continue doing a \u2018job well done\u2019. It demonstrates that they are appreciated and are a valued member of the team \u2013 and everyone wants to feel that their contribution is worth something.<\/p>\n\n
The use of rewards, if done correctly, is a way of motivating your employees to do the best they can every day. What do rewards look like?<\/h3>\n\n
Rewards can come in different forms. Saying \u2018thank you\u2019 for a job well done will cost you nothing and is usually valued by the individual. Public recognition is another way to reward employees. This could be a regular occurrence, e.g. monthly or 6 monthly, with the announcement made at a staff meeting.<\/p>\n\n
Honour special achievements made by your employees; for example, if they have been doing additional study to learn or refine a skill, you could reward that with a certificate, a restaurant voucher, or movie tickets.<\/p>\n\n
As previously stated, rewarding individuals makes them feel valued and appreciated, but what about the rest of the team? If they have all worked hard to complete a job or have worked under difficult conditions, a team reward should be considered.<\/p>\n\n
This could take the form of shouting drinks after work at the end of the week or organising a barbeque. Whatever the reward, it should show that you appreciate the work they have done \u2013 after all, they are making money for you.<\/p>\n\n
Rewards don't have to be a major cost to you, but they will make a difference to your employees. It will demonstrate that you value the work they do, that you value their ongoing development, and that you value who they are. Having staff that feel valued will lead to staff that will stay. This will save you time and money as you will not need to recruit and retrain new staff. Keep rewards regular \u2013 this gives the employees something to aim for.<\/li>\n\t

Reviewing staff pay<\/h2>\n\n
Unless the worker is a trainee or apprentice, there is no legal requirement to review the amount you pay your employees.<\/p>\n\n
As mentioned previously, trainees and apprentices generally earn less than the adult minimum wage. Because of this, their pay needs to be reviewed and changed to reflect their increase in knowledge and skills, the amount of industry study they are doing, and their age.<\/p>\n\n
Most employees, however, will expect their pay to increase over time as the cost of living goes up and they gain more experience. You may consider basing an increase to an employee's pay on a number of reasons. The most common reasons being:<\/p>\n\n

Whilst there is no legal requirement for you to review your employees\u2019 pay rates, there is nothing stopping your employees asking for their pay rates to be reviewed.<\/p>\n\n
If, as a business, you are unable to increase their hourly rate or salary, what options are available?<\/p>\n\n
Think back to the previous sections in this resource. Offering other benefits could be a solution. For example, you could add allowances such as a tool allowance, or provide access to the company vehicle, or increase the business KiwiSaver contribution.<\/p>\n\n
All of this will add value.
